My progress towards my objectives as a VISTA

Title: PCCC Community Service VISTA

Site Name: Passaic County Community College

Goal of the Overall VISTA Project: The VISTA project will benefit vulnerable youth who reside in Paterson, New Jersey. The VISTA members will contribute to the project goals by performing activities such as developing and coordinating the efforts of the mentoring program; expanding the outreach of the campus based student organizations and initiatives to increase the number of volunteer students engaged in community service, including the recruitment and training of volunteers - especially PCCC students who are in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) related fields willing to serve as mentors to local youth.

Objective of the Assignment

Community Outreach: Identify community needs and build pathways to community programs that can address those needs

Member Activity

Monitor and encourage the participation of members of MOCSI, program ambassadors, and core group members in community service activities – especially mentoring urban youth.

Program Evaluation & Sustainability: Document and evaluate service projects; compile and analyze the results for continued improvement;

Work with PCCC staff and community partners to apply for funding to ensure program sustainability.

Administrative: Research, document, and disseminate best practices for recruiting and sustaining the engagement of community college students in service – especially mentoring urban youth;

Establish and maintain a community partner repository and create a community advisory board;

Provide monthly reports of project progress and participate in program evaluation;

Serve on campus committees to promote leadership development and community service campus-wide.

Develop and provide training systems for MOCSI and other community groups in mentoring / community service activities.

Help to organize leadership summits on the college campus, involving key college and community constituents.

Participate in training and professional development activities.
